Music
Each one of our Elvira Slate Investigations books has its own theme tune! These appear as the soundtracks of our book trailers. Helen Jacey is inspired to write a song for each novel, capturing the themes of each story. Read on to find out more, watch the music videos, and we would love it if you save the songs to your playlist!

About the song
Made Moll
Helen Jacey says “Made Moll is the first song I ever wrote for my book series and is the theme tune of Jailbird Detective. In the novel, Elvira finally is released from prison in 1945, and jumps parole. What follows is a journey of reinvention. The theme of self-empowerment is very strong in my series, reflecting the resilience of Elvira as she becomes a private investigator in the face of innumerable odds. The song celebrates learning, growing, and doing your own thing, in spite of your origins, the hard knocks of life, and the people who have hurt you. It’s got a very defiant energy!”

About the song
My Particular Guy
Helen Jacey says: “Irreverent. Defiant. Passionate. These are the ideas that inspired me to write My Particular Guy a song that echoes the theme of forbidden love and secret affairs in Chipped Pearls. In the story, Elvira has to crack a case that originates in a secret affair that has gone badly wrong, and now a woman faces the death penalty. Not only that, while investigating, Elvira is consumed by her own inappropriate love affair. So, the song is a little bit cheeky in spirit! The song also celebrates loving as an act of defiance against society’s conventions. My crime fiction is full of characters who live and love on their own terms in an era where racially mixed relationships and queer love were banned. I hope you like the song!”
